Discovery Bay Studies

A Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, Inc. Discovery Classroom

Appropriate for grades 5+.

This is a 4-4.5 hour program, whose purpose is to educate our next generation on the importance of protecting the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history while providing a qualified field experience to reinforce Maryland Learning Objectives. This is a quality based student directed field experience that focuses on science.

Students will hypothesize what they think they will discover, and whether the upper Bay is healthy. They then conduct experiments to test their hypotheses as we sail around the Susquehanna Flats. They record data that is reported to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and used as part of a monitoring program. Students learn about the problems facing the Bay, the solutions to these problems, and what each individual can do to improve the health of the Bay.

Cost:

$750.00 per 25 students plus 2 teachers/chaperones. This program qualifies for the Chesapeake Bay Trust grant, which will cover ½ of the cost. Please go to www.cbtrust.org for more information on the grant.

Discovery History Hunters

A Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, Inc. Discovery Classroom

Appropriate for elementary levels 1-3

This is a 4-4.5 hour 2 part program; students spend approx. 2 hours on the Skipjack and 2 hours on the Discovery Traveler with 1/2 hour lunch break.

On board the Martha Lewis:

Students will take a front seat approach to navigation, sailing and simple boat mechanics en route to a treasure that lies hidden in the harbor in Havre de Grace. Alone with charts, a compass, and pirate riddles, the students will begin their day with a treasure hunt. They will be required to listen to historical tales of the Chesapeake Bay and Havre de Grace in order to decipher riddles leading them on a hunt which culminates with a sweet reward. Piracy ensues as the students gain an understanding of the local maritime history and become acquainted with simple navigational skills.

Aboard the Discovery Traveler:

Students will continue their exploration for treasures in Havre de Grace with games, walk on the promenade and even a visitor from Havre de Grace’s past.

Discovery Bay Patrol

A Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, Inc. Discovery Classroom

Appropriate for elementary levels 2-4

This is a 4-4.5 hour 2 part program. The purpose of which is to assist children to understand the importance of preservation and conservation of the wetlands, the Chesapeake Bay watershed and the Bay.

Onboard the Martha Lewis:

Students will help set the sails as they go out for a comprehensive 2-hour program. Three stations will be presented: a watershed table to show effect on the Bay, Underwater exploration to identify living creatures of the Bay and Boat build to demonstrate buoyancy.

Onboard the Discovery Traveler:

History, Culture and Preservation meet on the Traveler Students will continue their studies of the Bay with interactive games, meeting some creatures that live in and around the Bay, a short nature walk.
